The PSJA school district in the Rio Grande Valley has taken a step towards helping students with special needs by teaching them life skills for adulthood in a home-like setting. The home was purchased with the original purpose of being torn down, but after seeing the potential that the house had, a decision was made to turn the house in a second home for students with special needs.
The Learning in Functional Environment Home “LIFE” aims toward teaching basic household duties, such as dishes, laundry, and gardening. It also allows students with special needs to attend school until the age of 21. This new program will hopefully inspire school districts across Texas to open up similar programs.
